7 Year Blogiversary

This humble, little space on the web is seven years old today.

This blog and I have been through a lot together. From knowing absolutely nothing when I set it up, to blogging like a fiend about a lot of dumb things, to finding my focus, to life getting more intense and time-consuming, to quiet introspection.

How to Build a TARDIS

Or, How to Get Your Creative DIY-er Best Friend to Build You a TARDIS Pantry.

One day a few months ago my husband and I (I think it was me, he thinks it was him) had a Whovian epiphany.

That you could totally make a pantry cabinet look like the Doctor's (Who, that is) TARDIS time machine!

I am slightly creative, but I have a few very creative friends, one of whom happens to enjoy DIY projects....

Old School Blogging: Things You're Dying to Know

The theme of my life this week is "old school".

From my best friend since high school visiting, to the kick-ass new cabinet she built me*, to finally getting the retro diner style table I've always wanted....

Yeah, old school.

So, Elaine says that Old School Blogging this month is "full-on random".

Random works for me because, along with old school, everything feels pretty random to me right now as well! (I cannot seem to have a day go according to plan to save my life.)

My Way or the Highway

Did you know today is My Way Day?

I'm a sucker for these silly daily "observances". I mean, why not?

My BFF -- also named Jennifer -- calls it taking a "Jen Zen" day.

If I had my way -- totally and completely -- for one whole day...

The Time I Couldn't Get Drunk...Until I Did

This one time....

I got so drunk I thought I was going to die of alcohol poisoning.

No joke, you guys.

Well, I mean, I wasn't seriously so drunk I could have died from alcohol poisoning. Buuuuttt....I was very young and naive, so I thought I was.

Let me also add, that I knew someone who did die of alcohol poisoning a few years prior, and I guess that traumatized me more than I knew at the time.

OK so, here's the silly story:

It was like 1995-97, somewhere in there. Probably can't remember exactly because I was drunk.

I was no more than 21 or 22.

5 Randomly Quirky Things

Who's up for some "5 random things" Old School Blogging?

Just telling you five random things about myself might sound easy, but I somehow have to choose which five things it will be (that you hopefully don't already know)....

Answering questions is easier, man!

1. Here's one my father just learned about me: Even though my toes are cold, I don't want to put something on my feet. I don't. I am not a fan of wearing anything on my feet in the house. It just bugs me. I think I want to feel the floor....or something.

Problem is, I'm getting older and my toes are getting colder. I am now understanding why old people move to warmer climates. Sigh. So yeah, I own a pair of slippers and several pairs of funky socks and I am begrudgingly wearing them around the house.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

As soon as I saw the topic for this month's Old School Blogging, this song started playing in my head:

And it has been stuck in there for DAYS. Hopefully getting this written and done will purge it from my brain!

Is it in your head now? Mwahaha.

10 Things I Would Pack for a Trip to a Deserted Island

I mean, if I knew beforehand I was going to a deserted island, of course.

Because it seems the way it usually works is that one is marooned due to some unforeseen circumstance and they have to get all resourceful in order to survive, possibly becoming besties with a volleyball. That would be scary and not at all preferable.

But if I could CHOOSE to go to a deserted island for a specified amount of time....now that might be pretty cool.

I Fell in Love with a Really Yummy Summer Cocktail

I quite unexpectedly fell in love with a cocktail I tried at Red Robin. I asked my server what all was in it and I swear she told me:
  • Moscato wine
  • Citrus vodka
  • Mango syrup
  • Club soda

Without Method or Conscious Decision

The March edition of Old School Blogging is completely random!

nataliedee.com
Questions have been asked, which I have answers for:

What is the last thing you watched on TV? Grey's Anatomy and Scandal. Scandal was super intense. And sad. It made me FEEL, and I like that.

When did you last step outside? What were you doing? Yesterday afternoon to go with my husband to his first physical therapy appointment.

What is on the walls of the room you are in? We moved our computer upstairs to the "loft" a couple of months ago. There are two airbrush paintings JHo did so long ago she wasn't even "JHo" then, some kid art, a clock, a Sky Landers chart and the Bon Jovi logo my friend Jess painted for me.

If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy? A super fun, awesome vacation for my family.

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know. So I have bad eyes, right? Well, sometimes I pretend I see something someone is trying to show me instead of explain that I can't see it, or just to make them happy.

Who made the last incoming call on your phone? My Aunt Renee.

If you could change something about your home, without worry about expense or mess, what would you do? Oh let me count the ways! I like my house, I really do, but.....when they built it, they could have done a few things differently. Like, extend the master bedroom all the way over the garage, they should have done the half bath door differently (it battles with the door to the garage), I don't understand the rocks on one side of our house and I kind of wish there wasn't a tall juniper blocking my view of the street.

What was the last thing you bought? A copy of Star Trek: Into Darkness on Blu-ray with a Target gift card. I may have said, "Hello, Chris Pine", when I picked it up. Maybe.

Would you go bungee jumping or sky diving? No. Seriously, I don't understand. Life is dangerous enough, I don't get why one would need to tempt fate.

If you could eat lunch with one famous person, who would it be? Jon Bon Jovi. Or Nathan Fillion. Or Oprah.

Which store would you choose to max out your credit card? Probably Costco. If they accepted anything besides American Express.

Is the glass half empty or half full? You know the answer to that!

What’s under your bed? The cable for the TV and some other random (there's that word again) electronic wires, a blanket, pillow, dust bunnies.

What is your favorite time of the day? I think the moment I feel like I'm done for the day, when I feel like I don't have to do any more things.

What inspires you? Truth, courage and a sunny day!

Now, tell me some random thing about you!

10 Things I Have a Crush On

I could totally write a list of more than 10 things that I crush on. Like my favorite TV shows, movies, music, wine and yarny things. But those are broader topics I think, and I figured I should try to be a little more specific.

1. Water - large bodies, rain, drinking. Water is a good thing. In fact, I'm thirsty.....

2. Sweet potato fries - Sweet. Potato. Fries.

3. Hard As Nails nail polish - it keeps my nails from tearing and splitting! They look so much better lately.

4. Babies - Ohmygodtheyaresocute!

5. Nonfat Salted Caramel Mochas - Yay Fall!

6. The post "Hating on the Poor is SO Funny! (Let's Make an eCard)" by Colleen at The Family Pants - I crushed on her HARD after reading it. And I told her so!

7. My son playing soccer - AJ is so into it, runs his little hear out, and it pretty much makes me proud.

8. The post "On respect, responsibility, and Mrs. Hall’s open letter to teenaged girls" by Kristin at Rage Against the Minivan - No, I am not the Mrs. Hall she is referring to.

9. My newest crush is Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor (Who) - I really liked David Tenant, but Matt Smith has nearly made me forget him in just a couple of weeks.

10. And.....um....this is kind of hard to admit, and you might think I'm bonkers, but.....Simon Cowell. I don't know what it is, but I like him. I know he can be an ass, but for some reason I don't really mind. I'm weird. I'm sorry.

Who/what are you crushing on these days?

How I Fell In Love With Jon Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi's third studio album, Slippery When Wet, was released on August 18, 1986. I had just moved to California (South Lake Tahoe, to be specific) to live with my mother. I was 12 and entering the 7th grade.

My mom's new boyfriend at the time (now my step-father) had a friend with a 10 year old daughter. I was introduced to her and we became BFFs in one evening. One of the things we bonded over was this new-ish rock band and their super cute lead singer with his big hair.

She and I would blast "You Give Love a Bad Name" and then "Livin' on a Prayer". We would watch MTV and scream and giggle when their videos came on.

And then. And THEN! Just after 1986 became 1987, we found out Bon Jovi would be playing at Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada, the closest city to us in Lake Tahoe.

But we had no money and the concert date was too close and there probably weren't any seats left anyway and WAAAAAA! Woe is us!

Then something amazing happened. My mom's boyfriend's roommate surprised us with tickets to the show. He and my friend's mom would take us girls.

You cannot imagine the squealing!

On January 23, 1987 I went to my first concert. I sat in the very top, nose-bleed, row of the arena and rocked out to my favorite band.

Jon wore that infamous Superman jean jacket of his (oh yes you ARE a super man, Jon!) and told a funny story about how they wrote "You Give Love a Bad Name". Jon flew out onto a pedestal in the middle of the floor crowd for a song. They were AH-MAY-ZING!

We may not have been close to the stage, but Jon made us feel like he saw us. I may have lost my voice yelling and singing along. Like I cared. I got to see the hottest rock band of the '80s in concert!

Major swoon. I STILL swoon over Jon Bon Jovi. He is pretty much the other love of my life.

I was listening to Pandora while out for a walk yesterday. Of course Bon Jovi is one of my stations. A live version of "Wanted Dead or Alive" came on. Jon said, "this is for all the cowboys out there", and the crowd went wild. A big grin came across my face, and when he started singing, goosebumps covered my skin. Their music, his voice and smile will never get old for me.

Sadly, that was the only time I've seen Bon Jovi in concert. It's a tragedy. I'm not a very good fangirl, am I?

The ABCs of Me

It's once again time to kick it Old School!

Old School Blogging, that is.

The ABCs of Me

A. Attached or single? Very attached. Married 15 years next month!

B. Best friend? My very best friend is my husband. He's my PERSON (Grey's Anatomy reference). But I also have my BFF from high school, J.Ho. My relationship with her is long distance, so I also have a couple local besties.

C. Cake or pie? PIE all the way! Especially caramel apple pie a la mode.

D. Day of choice? Of the week? I know this is contrary to how most people feel, but I like Mondays because I feel like they're a reboot day. Start of a fresh, new week.

E. Essential item? My glasses. Because I'm a blind girl. Getting new ones soon!

F. Favorite color? Blue.

G. Gummy bears or worms? Ew, neither. Red Vines!

H. Hometown? Everett, WA

I. Favorite indulgence? Starbucks

J. January or July? That's funny, those are the months my children were born in, so I shall say BOTH!

K. Kids? A girl and a boy.

L. Life isn't complete without? Laughter.

M. Marriage date? July 18, 1998

N. Number of brothers/sisters? None. Husband has one sister (and a step-sister).

O. Oranges or apples? I'll say apples because there is so much you can do with them. But I hate apple juice.

P. Phobias? Creepy crawly things.

Q. Quotes? Seriously? I LOVE quotes!

R. Reasons to smile? My kids and husband, my cat, flowers, clouds, getting a text from a friend, when my dad stops by with muffins, blogging and reading blogs, Twitter, good wine, making things with yarn....

S. Season of choice? Officially I have to say spring. I realized this year just how energizing and full of hope it is. But I also love autumn.

T. Tag 5 people. Sarcasm Goddess, Leslie, Audrey, Danielle and Amy.

U. Unknown fact about me? When I was a kid I thought bands went to the radio station to play their songs. I didn't know the songs were on records. I don't know why I didn't get this, since my father had a zillion records.

V. Vegetable? Carrots, snow peas, red peppers.

W. Worst habit? Night time snacking

X. X-ray or Ultrasound? Depends on the situation...?

Y. Your favorite food? Burritos! Or anything with caramel.

Z. Zodiac sign? My sun sign is Aries, according to my birth date. However, I believe that is actually the least of my astrological influences. My moon sign is Aquarius and my rising sign is Pisces. I think they have more sway over who I really am. But I'm no expert!

Your Social Media Rights

Everyone knows the Miranda Rights cops recite when they arrest someone.

If not (what rock have you been under?), here they are:

Your Miranda Rights
  • You have the right to remain silent.
  • Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in a court of law.
  • You have the right to speak to an attorney.
  • If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.
  • Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?
For some unknown reason I got to thinking about the perils of social media and the Miranda Rights came to mind. Surely the two shouldn't be related because social media is FUN! Ahem.

Nevertheless, I give you:

Your Social Media Rights
  • You have the right not to Comment.
  • Anything you Tweet or Pin can and will be held against you on Facebook.
  • You have the right to connect with an attorney on LinkedIn.
  • If you cannot find anyone on Google+, you may peruse Instagram.
  • Do you understand how the Klout algorithm works as it has been explained to you?
And because this is so clever and witty and gosh darnit! pin-able, I give you:

Tell me what you think!

For Your Pinning Pleasure

I love me some quotes.

I really love me some nice LOOKING quotes, something I've discovered only recently as a blogger, and as the phenomenon that is Pinterest has taken off.

I've made a few of my own "pretty" quotes already. And I thought I'd better make some more before our beloved Picnik disappears on the 19th.

Here are the ones I've previously included in my posts:

My Facebook page header

Here are a couple new ones:

And this is me. This is one of the best things I've ever said in a post!

So, feel free to pin away, if you like any of them!

Do you have a favorite?
